The District of Leistavia is a hybrid cultural entity mediated
by the internet. The cultures of Estonia, Pitcairn Island and Norfolk
Island are formative influences. Phase one of the project, the creation
of Leistavia was a project for ISEA 2004, called \'The District
of Leistavia welcomes you\'. This involved research of the influencing
cultures, establishing an international collaborative team consisting
of Ian M Clothier in New Zealand, Joe Flynn on Norfolk Island and
Kylli Mariste of Estonia, engaging in numerous email discussions,
and creating an online voting form where voters registered preferences
with a view to writing a constitution.
Phase two of the project, \'The District of Leistavia is you\'
involved collating the responses, generating statistics that form
a profile of Leistavians. The statistics were then used to create
the Constitution of Leistavia.
Ian M Clothier is an artist writer and currently lectures in Art
and Media at the Western Institute of Technology at Taranaki, New
Zealand. He has an MA with First Class Honours from Auckland University
of Technology. Research foci are on cultural hybridity and nonlinearity
in content and presentation. A selected artist for ISEA 2004, he
was also invited to address the Ninth International Conference on
Thinking. Joe Flynn is a writer from Norfolk Island and Kylli Mariste
is a performance/new media artist from Estonia.
